In a battle between conference titans, the Phoenix Mercury beat the Fever 106-90. Cappie Pondexter led the Mercury with 25 points. Tamika Catchings had her fourth double-double of the season with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Douglas sat out the game with a left ankle sprain.

Detroit’s Last Outing (September 1, 2009):
Phoenix MVP candidates Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter combined for 45 points, but were unable to beat the Shock, falling 101-99. Cheryl Ford led Detroit with 22 rebounds and 11 rebounds. Taurasi missed a potential winning 3-pointer as time expired.

Last Meeting (August 15, 2009):
The Fever pounded the Shock, 82-59. Katie Douglas led all scorers with 19 points. Detroit only had one player score in double figures, reserve Shavonte Zellous scored 16 points. Indiana was down by 17 points at one time in the second quarter before a monumental shift in momentum turned the game into a rout.

Stats and Trends:

  • Tamika Catchings is 33 points from scoring the 4,000th point of her career. She is just 15 steals away from the WNBA record of 100 steals in a season. She needs to average three steals a game to tie the record.
