Orender Addresses Women in Business
This diverse crowd was treated to opening remarks from Mayor Bart Peterson who acknowledged the difficulty in breaking the barrier of "the good-old-boys-club" for women in business. Mayor Peterson also conveyed the importance of the continued success and future growth of NAWBO.
Tamika Catchings, star forward of the Indiana Fever, introduced the keynote speaker Donna Orender. Orender is the President of the WNBA. She spoke of the strides made by women in sports since the passage of Title IX legislation. But, also added that there is a feeling shared by women who still struggle to "play in the game".
Mirroring Mayor Peterson's comments of overcoming hurdles for women in the business world, Orender expressed that playing team sports allows young women to develop important skills that can also be equated to success in the business world. Those skills include a positive attitude and the ability to make good decisions.
Following Orender's remarks and corporate sponsor recognition, NAWBO recognized Kay Fleming of Ice Miller as the 2006 Choice Award Recipient. Dottie Hancock of Eaton & Hancock Associates received the Member of the Year honor. The Woman Business Owner of the Year award was bestowed upon Anne Sellers of Sensory Technology.
