Fever Welcomes 17 to Opening of Training Camp
Head Coach Brian Winters welcomed 17 players to training camp Sunday morning at Conseco Fieldhouse as the Indiana Fever conducted its first official workout of the 2005 season. The Fever opened camp with eight returning veterans and nine newcomers vying for 11 roster positions when Indiana opens the regular season, May 22 (6:00 p.m.) against the Charlotte Sting.
Among the veteran returners were WNBA All-Stars Tamika Catchings and Natalie Williams, and 2004 starters Kelly Miller and Kelly Schumacher. Former Portland and Seattle point guard Tully Bevilacqua practiced for the first time with her new teammates, as did rookie draft picks Tan White and Yolanda Paige – the nation’s 2004-05 college leaders in scoring and assists, respectively.
Three camp participants – free agents Iveta Marcauskaite, Tonya Massaline and veteran forward Jurgita Streimikyte, will not report until May 10 following the conclusion of European playoff series. Streimikyte, a native Lithuanian who played 54 games with the Fever in 2000 and 2001, has helped her Lithuanian club to the EuroLeague semifinals.
One Fever veteran who was not in camp Sunday was forward Kristen Rasmussen, who was involved in a weekend trade with the Houston Comets. As compensation, Indiana received a third-round pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft.
The Fever will conduct nine days of practice before opening its preseason schedule May 3 against the Detroit Shock, in a game played in the Joyce Center on the University of Notre Dame campus. Indiana hosts its lone preseason home game on May 10 against the Phoenix Mercury (7:00 p.m.), and travels to Phoenix for a final preseason tuneup on May 15.
