Fever Announces Regular Season Roster
The Indiana Fever has waived Astou Ndiaye-Diatta, trimming its roster to 11 active players in preparation for the 2005 Women’s National Basketball Association season that begins this weekend. The Fever also placed Coretta Brown, who had arthroscopic knee surgery in February, on the injured list.
Ndiaye-Diatta was signed by the Fever as a free agent prior to the 2004 season, though she spent the majority of last season on the injured list with a bruised knee. Rookie free agent Jenni Benningfield averaged 5.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game during the preseason, and shot 8-of-12 from the field to secure the final roster spot. Drafted by Charlotte in the second round of the 2004 WNBA Draft out of Vanderbilt, Benningfield was signed by the Fever last August, but through seven games in September she never appeared on the team’s active roster.
Benningfield joins four other prominent newcomers to the Fever roster for 2005 – veteran point guard Tully Bevilaqua, rookie guards Yolanda Paige and Tan White, and returning European forward Jurgita Streimikyte. Streimikyte was a Fever starter in 2001, but has remained in her native Lithuania the past three seasons after giving birth to a son, Tomas, in 2002.
Bevilaqua, Paige and White have been instrumental in guiding a resurgent offense and transition game for the Fever – helping Indiana to an average of 82.0 points per game, including 27.0 from the free throw line in three preseason victories. Last season, Indiana averaged 64.6 points and just 13.2 free throws.
The Fever finished 15-19 overall last season, and a game out of playoff contention. Indiana is bidding for a return to the WNBA Playoffs for the first time since its lone appearance in 2002.
The Fever opens the regular season this weekend – Sunday against the Charlotte Sting (6:00 p.m.) and Tuesday against the Phoenix Mercury (7:00 p.m.).
