Fever Re-Signs Davenport to Multi-Year Deal; Adds Shyra Ely to Training Camp Roster

News Release | February 4, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS – Fifth-year pro Jessica Davenport has signed a multi-year contract to return to the Indiana Fever. The Fever also announced the free agent signing of former Indiana Miss Basketball honoree Shyra Ely to a training camp contract. Per team policy, terms of the contracts are not disclosed.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft and a three-time All-American from Ohio State, Davenport averaged 7.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and nearly a block a game during the 2010 WNBA season, despite just over 14 minutes per game off the bench. The 6-5 center has steadily increased her playing time behind All-Star Tammy Sutton-Brown and carved a niche in the Fever lineup. She initially signed with Indiana at the beginning of the 2009 campaign and become a valuable contributor during the Fever’s run to the WNBA Finals.

Said Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Kelly Krauskopf, “Jessica has improved tremendously in the last two years and she will continue to be an integral part of our post rotation. Her size and versatility give us a very big front line. I am excited that she will be back in a Fever uniform.”

Bolstered by the free agent acquisition of veteran forward Tangela Smith earlier this week, Davenport returns to a rotation that includes Sutton-Brown, Tamika Catchings and Jessica Moore – and possibly Ely, who plays both forward positions.

Invited to training camp will be the 6-2 Ely, a five-year pro who missed the 2010 season due to injury. She is currently playing overseas (Tarsus, Turkey), where she is active for the first time since sustaining a knee injury last winter in China.

The 2001 Naismith and USA Today prep player of the year as a high school senior at Indianapolis’ Ben Davis High, Ely graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2005. She was a second-round draft pick by San Antonio and was traded to Seattle after two seasons. Two years later, she signed a free agent contract with Chicago, where she appeared in all 34 games in 2009 with averages of 6.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.

A WNBA playoff participant in six straight seasons and seven times since 2002, the Indiana Fever begins its 12th season by hosting the Chicago Sky on Saturday, June 4 (7:00 p.m.). For season ticket information, visit FeverBasketball.com or call (317) 917-2500.
