Fever Falters As Douglas Scores Career-High

Tan White
White came off the bench to spark the Fever with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She made 3-of-6 3-point attempts including a near game-winning trey with 31 seconds to go for a short-lived 74-73 lead.
Tamika Whitmore
Whitmore matched White's 15 ponits, battling inside most of the night against 7-footer Margo Dydek.
Brian Winters
In general:
“We played awful defense. We helped them with our turnovers. We’ve got to get shots at the end. Connecticut came with more desperation and intensity. We’ve got to get more focused. We need to learn how to play against zones. Teams are going to continue to play zones against us. We need to come with the mentality that no one can beat us. We need a championship mentality. We didn’t drive into gaps and make plays, we were too nonchalant."

Tamika Whitmore
In general:
“We beat ourselves. We had way too many turnovers and we didn’t move the ball well against the defense. [Lindsay] Whalen and [Katie] Douglas broke down our defense with penetration. We need to get better help-side defense and learn to contain on the perimeter.”

INDIANAPOLIS, June 22 (AP) -- Katie Douglas scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Connecticut Sun to a 78-74 victory over the Indiana Fever on Friday night.

Asjha Jones had 16 points, including a three-point play to give Connecticut a 76-74 lead with 27 seconds left, and Margo Dydek finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Sun (5-7), who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Tamika Whitmore and Tan White each had 15 points for the Fever (9-3). Tamika Catchings added nine points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.

Indiana tied the score at 71 on Catchings' 3-pointer with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter.

After Lindsay Whalen's basket put Connecticut ahead by two, White hit a 3-pointer to put the Fever back in front, 74-73, with 31 seconds remaining.

Following Jones' 3-point play, Indiana's Anna DeForge missed a jumper that would have tied the game, and Douglas nailed two free throws for the final margin.

Connecticut began the second half with two straight baskets to take a 32-29 lead, but Indiana went on an 8-0 run to open a 37-32 advantage. The Sun answered by scoring the next six points.

Later in the third quarter, the Fever used a 9-0 run to build a 48-40 lead.

  • With tonight's appearance and her four assists, the Sun's Margo Dydek has played in 300 WNBA games and handed out 500+ assists in her career. She is just the second player in league history with 2,000 career rebounds, 500 career assists and 300 career games played. The only other player to reach these three milestones in her career is Lisa Leslie. Including Connecticut's 39.2 percent FG, the Fever has held its last seven opponents to less than 40 percent shooting from the floor. That is a franchise record.
  • Katie Douglas' 30 points tonight are her career-high. Her previous high had been 28 points, which she had accomplished three times.
  • Including Douglas, all five Sun starters scored in double figures. That is the first time since last August (8/8/06) that five Connecticut players scored 10+ points in the same game.
  • Connecticut's 31 points in the fourth quarter are the most scored against Indiana in any period this season.
  • All eight Fever players to log at least 10 minutes also had at least one assist and the team tied a season-high with 19 assists. Tamika Catchings had her most assists of the last seven games with seven tonight.
  • Including her team-high tying 15 points tonight, Tan White has led the Fever in scoring three times this season. However, tonight's loss is the first of those three games.
  • Shooting 4-4 tonight, Anna DeForge has extended her consecutive free throws streak to 16.
  • Shooting just 3-13 from the floor tonight, Tamika Catchings was held under double figures for the first time this season. She fell one point short of her league-high fifth double-double and her fourth in a row.
  • Catchings collected a game-high 12 boards tonight, her fourth straight game with 10+ rebounds and her fifth of the season.
  • Catchings also tied a season-high with three blocked shots.
  • Margo Dydek's 10 points tonight included her second 3-pt FG of the season. That is the first time since 2002 (while playing for Utah) that Dydek has made more than one 3-pt FG in a season. Dydek has made a total of 23 3-pt FG (23-75, .307) in her 10-year WNBA career.
  • With her 16 points tonight, Ashja Jones has scored in double-figures in nine straight games.
  • Second in the WNBA in assists-to-turnover ratio, K.B. Sharp had three assists and just one turnover in 14+ minutes tonight. She has dealt 24 assists and committed just 10 turnovers (2.40:1) this season.
