Sheryl Swoopes made her USA Basketball debut while trying out for the 1992 U.S. Olympic team as a senior at Texas Tech University, but did not make the squad until 1994. She helped the U.S. finish with a bronze medal at the 1994 World Championship before winning a gold medal at the 1994 Goodwill Games. Swoopes went on to win three gold medals in the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics and one gold medal at the 2002 World Championships. In 102 career games with USA Basketball, the 6-0 forward has averaged 11.9 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 50.3% from the field.

Swoopes was signed by the WNBA and assigned to the Houston Comets on January 22, 1997 and has played with the Comets ever since. During her eight-year career (she did not play in 2001 due to injury), the 1993 NCAA National Player of the Year has been named WNBA M.V.P. and Defensive Player of the Year three times, and has led the WNBA in scoring twice. She has also helped the Comets win four consecutive WNBA championships from 1997 to 2000 and recently played in her sixth All-Star Game. Swoopes holds career WNBA averages of 16.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 259 regular season games. In 32 playoff game, Swoopes has averaged 16.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
