Maria Stepanova was a member of the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Russian Olympic teams. The 6-8 center averaged 8.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in 2004 as she led Russia to an Olympic bronze medal.

Stepanova was selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the first round (eighth overall) of the 1998 WNBA Draft. She played in the WNBA from 1998 to 2001 before sitting out three seasons and returning to the Mercury's lineup in 2005. Stepanova also did not play during the 2006 season. The 37 year old made one postseason appearance in five WNBA seasons.
