WNBA at 2005 NBA All-Star: Radio Shack Shooting Stars Competition
Among the many spectacular events that will be taking place during All-Star Weekend is the second annual RadioShack Shooting Stars competition. Four teams, each comprised of an NBA player, WNBA player and NBA legend, will compete in the RadioShack Shooting Stars competition, to be held on NBA All-Star Saturday Night, Feb. 19 in Denver.
The four WNBA stars who will be participating in the event are hometown hero Becky Hammon, defending champion Lisa Leslie, 2004 WNBA Rookie of the Year Diana Taurasi and Detroit Shock and Olympic gold medalist Swin Cash .
Upon being selected to compete, each one sat down with WNBA.com to share their thoughts and expectations for competing on the big stage.
Swin Cash, Detroit Shock
"I have been shooting and getting ready, in the gym with McFilthy and McNasty. It will be exciting and I'm definitely not nervous. It will be fun to be around the guys."
Becky Hammon, New York Liberty
"It's going to be awesome. I have a lot of good friends and family back in Colorado. It will be good to be back there and be a part of NBA All-Star. I am looking forward to the Saturday night. It will be exciting and a lot of fun. I am not sure which uniform I will be wearing yet, a Liberty or a Nuggets jersey. I think they might be making me a Denver jersey, though. I would love a Denver one, that would be cool, a souvenir with my name on it."
Lisa Leslie, Los Angeles Sparks
"As the defending champions, there is a lot of pressure on us this year because one of my main partners, Derrick Fisher, is no longer with the Lakers. We have been through this together for a few years now and it will be different without him this time around. I know we are probably expected to repeat, but I think we'll be the underdogs this year. Team camaraderie is important, but Magic hasn't been in the gym much either. He has been in the studio with TNT, so this may be the year that we are most vulnerable. We'll see if we can pull it out."
Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury
"I think we have a really solid team heading into the competition. The city of Phoenix will be well-represented by Thunder Dan, the Matrix and me. Don't count us out... I have been working on my half-court shot just about everyday, so don't be surprised when we walk out of there with the title. You hear that, Lisa? I'm really just looking forward to being able to play with some other great people on All-Star Saturday Night, watch the dunk contest and hold up those big 9's and 10's after the sweet dunks."
