You know you have it good as the defending champion when you have the luxury to bring Rebekkah Brunson and DeMya Walker off the bench. That is because forward Erin Buescher has emerged as a post threat for the Monarchs this season. She scored 18 points in the opening day win against Phoenix and has not looked back.

Now in her fifth WNBA season, Sacramento's Buescher is getting the chance to prove that she can be a solid contributor, if not a star, in the WNBA. Halfway through the season, she is averaging 10.9 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game are both career highs. Her previous best season came in 2001 when she started 19 games as a rookie with the Minnesota Lynx.

The 2001 graduate of The Masters College averaged 9.1 minutes per game in the Monarchs championship season a year ago. She is averaging more than double that this season, 20.1 minutes per game. She was inserted into the starting lineup last week and delivered in a major way.

Last Thursday at home against the Lynx, Buescher had a career night, getting her first start of the season and scoring 25 points and grabbing nine rebounds in 27 minutes of action in a 87-78 win. Both were career-highs. She followed that up with her first double-double of the season on Saturday in a 65-57 win in Charlotte. Her 13 points and 13 rebounds came in 34 minutes of action. A night later, on Sunday, even though Sacramento fell in Houston, the victims of a back-to-back on the road, Buescher tallied 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Whereas she had not been a blip on the statistical radar in the past, she ranks sixth in the WNBA in Field-Goal Percentage (0.534), tenth overall with 59 free throws made, seventh with 84 free throw attempts. She has also been a force on the boards, ranking third in the WNBA in Offensive Rebounds and even falls in the top 20 in blocks.
