Guard/forward Nicole Powell was an All-America at Stanford and the third overall pick by the Charlotte Sting in the 2004 WNBA Draft. She hit one of the most memorable shots of the 2004 season, a buzzer beater against the Los Angeles Sparks on June 20, 2004. This offseason, she was traded to the Sacramento Monarchs in the first blockbuster deal of the winter. With a return to northern California in the near future, she talks about the role of fitness and staying in shape as vital to her long-term career in the WNBA.

Q. What's your favorite exercise for lower body and what results does this exercise help you achieve?
My favorite exercise for my lower body is running. I like to run because I enjoy being outside. I can also people watch and jam out to tunes on my i-pod while I'm running.

Q. What's your favorite exercise for upper body?
Curls. Doing curls helps define the muscles in your arms.

Q. What's your favorite cardio exercise?

The elliptical machine. It a great cardio workout and it also helps you strengthen your calves, thighs and gluts

Q. How do you work out on your off days during the season?
I run and do the elliptical machine

Q. What do you do to stay in shape during the offseason?
I like to do full body conditioning. I work on my skills on the court and also do cardio workouts and lift weights.

Q. Is there a fitness/exercise goal that you've set for yourself that you're working towards now?
I am just working on getting in the best shape possible

Q. Is there a fitness accomplishment you're most proud of?
I like coming back into the basketball season prepared and in good shape. It makes you feel good to know that your hard work in the offseason paid off.

Q. Is there one exercise that you hate doing and have to force yourself to complete?

Q. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to get into better shape for playing basketball?
Incorporate speed training and distance. Make everything you do basketball related. For example if you are running, picture in your mind running the length of the basketball court.

Q. How would you describe the role/importance of fitness and exercise in your life?
I don't think there's anything more important. Fitness and exercise are the keys to living well. I know that when I don't work out as well I don't feel as good or have as much energy as I do when I work-out.

Q. Is there a song/type of music that you listen to while you're working out?
I have a workout mix that I made that I listen to while working out.

Q. Is there a certain food/meal that you like to eat before games? What foods do you have a weakness for? What's your favorite healthy snack?
I like to eat breakfast foods like omelets before games. I have a weakness for Mexican food and bacon cheeseburgers. My favorite healthy snacks are cereal (Total and Wheaties) and pears.
