Even though she just turned 31 years old during the 2005 WNBA Finals, there is no way that anyone can could tell that Sacramento Monarchs point guard Ticha Penicheiro is getting older. Sure, the new WNBA champ holds virtually every assist record in WNBA history over her eight-year career, but she continues to dazzle fans, teammates and even the opposition with her playmaking highlights. So as someone who plays the game she loves all year round, how does this international superstar compete with all the new kids coming into the league and stay in as great shape as she does?

"As far as lifting, I do a lot of leg curls and squats. I don't love lifting for my legs, but I know it's important for defensive purposes and keeping myself in shape. When I get into the weightroom now, I pay more attention to my lower body."
your favorite exercise for upper body?
"I work a lot of things for my triceps and biceps. I do curls and stuff like that. I think it is important that I have a lot of strength in my hands because I handle the ball a lot. It's important that I have strong hands and strong arms to protect the ball. When I get in the weightroom, I do a lot of push-ups. Push-ups are great because they work a lot of muscles. But even if you can't get to a gym, you can always get down and do a lot of push-ups."
Q. What's your favorite cardio exercise?
"The stationary bike or the Stair Master."
Q. How do you work out on your
off days during the season?
"I'll be honest… I do not always work out on my off days. They are very rare and unique and usually very tired from traveling. I just use my off days to rest. I might walk or take my dog to the park and playing or running with him. If we have many off days in a row, I'll go to the gym."
What do you do to stay in shape during the offseason?
"I don't have an offseason because I go overseas and keep playing. But the key is to play pick-up basketball. That is the best way to prepare for the season. Sometimes it's hard to find people to run with, which is why the gym is good for cardio."
What's your toughest fitness challenge?
"Running long distance. I really don't like it. I remember having to run the mile in college. I hated it. I have no problem running sprints or playing in the gym with a ball on the court all day. But distance… not fun."
Q. Is there a fitness/exercise goal that
you've set for yourself that you're working towards now?
"The older you get, the more important it is to pay attention to your body. Stretching and drinking lots of water is important. But as long as I feel good, I don't pay too much attention to goals."
Q. Is there a fitness accomplishment you're most proud of?
"I never really set any goals for myself in the weightroom or anything like that. In college, there were certain requirements we had to meet. My weight has never fluctuated and I am happy with the way I look."
Q. Is there
a song/type of music that you listen to while you're working out?
"I like R&B, but sometimes you need some more energy when you're working out, so I'll mix in a little hip hop."
