Fan Faves ’04: And the Winners Are ...
Sept. 23 -- We nominated. You voted. As the regular season came to an end, WNBA.com asked who you thought was most deserving for each of the four major regular-season awards. With the initial returns are in (it's never too late, you can still go to the pages and vote), here are the winner in the 2004 fan awards:
Most Valuable Player
Lisa Leslie, Los Angeles Sparks (33%)|
Leslie was third in the league in scoring (17.6 points per game), first in rebounding (9.9 rpg) and her team had the best regular season record (25-9). Any questions?
Rookie of the Year
Diana Taurasi, Phoenix Mercury (66%)|
Led the Mercury to nine more wins than the year before (from eight to 17), while leading all rookies in scoring with 17.0 points per game.
Defensive Player of the Year
Lisa Leslie, Los Angeles Sparks (32%)|
Led the league in blocks per game (2.88), defensive rebounds per game (8.1) and finished in the top 15 in steals (1.47 spg).
Coach of the Year
Mike Thibault, Connecticut Sun (32%)|
For the second consecutive season, Thibault led the Sun to the postseason. Only this season, the Sun are the top seed in the East.
