Keeping in Touch With Candice Dupree

Candice Dupree has been a star for the Chicago Sky in each of her three seasons in the WNBA. The 6'2" forward out of Temple has improved her numbers each year, and in 2008, she averaged 16.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in helping lead the improved Sky into playoff contention. spoke with Dupree recently to get her take on training in the offseason and on what motivates her to be her best.

Dot-com: What is your motivation when you don't feel like working out, running that extra mile or waking up early for practice?

Dupree: "I would have to say the fans. When you think about how much support they give us for our games and how many different events they come to just to see us and get autographs from us and stuff like that… it's amazing. So, yeah, I'd probably have to say the fans."

Dot-com: What else drives you? What other goals have you set for yourself off the court that you're pursuing?

Dupree: "I've actually been looking into maybe getting my masters in entrepreneurship and looking at owning a small business. Or, I've also been looking at some real estate stuff, like flipping houses."

Dot-com: What is your workout regime like?

Dupree: "In season they try to have us lift every other day, but that depends on our playing schedule and our traveling schedule. We practice for like two hours. In the offseason, it depends on how I feel (laughs). But I usually do something every day, whether it's a basketball workout or lifting and cardio."

Dot-com: Do have any healthy snacks or meals that you rely on?

Dupree: "I don't like healthy snacks (laughs). No, I think I eat healthy for the most part. I eat skinless chicken… but I'm not a health freak. I'll eat some junk food. I cook when I feel like it. I'm a big steak person."

Dot-com: Was there a time in your career of playing basketball when you thought about giving up the game or you thought you weren't good enough?

Dupree: "I actually thought about quitting my freshman year of college, and before I even started playing. We had summer workouts and preseason was coming up and I was just like, 'I can't do this. This is too much.' But my mom told me that if I came home she'd put my bags on the street and send me back (laughs). I think it was a little bit of hanging around with the wrong people too. What helped me get beyond it were the people around me like my mom and the assistant coach that recruited me. They just talked to me and said, 'You're going to be all right. Hang in there.' They were right."
