- Williams signs extension through 2013 season -

ATLANTA, January 6, 2012 – The Atlanta Dream announced today the team has signed Assistant Coach Fred Williams to a contract extension through the 2013 season.

“Fred has been a tremendous asset to our franchise since the start,” said Atlanta Dream Head Coach and General Manager Marynell Meadors. “His coaching experience in combination with his expertise in scouting and player development has made him extremely valuable to our organization. I look forward to continuing to work together as we build on our team’s success.”

Williams has been a member of the coaching staff since the Dream’s inaugural season in the WNBA in 2008. In four seasons in Atlanta, Williams has helped the Dream to three postseason appearances and back-to-back Eastern Conference championships.

Prior to joining the Dream staff, Williams served as a head coach for the San Diego Siege (National Women’s Basketball League) and Utah Starzz (WNBA), and as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Sting (WNBA). He also served as an advance scout for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and Utah Jazz. In addition to his professional experience, Williams served as the women’s basketball head coach at the University of Southern California (1995-1997). He previously served 10 seasons at USC as an assistant coach, including two seasons as Associate Head Coach alongside Cheryl Miller (1993-1995). Williams helped guide the Lady Trojans to the 1984 NCAA championship, five Pacific-10 Conference titles and nine NCAA tournament appearances.

Williams has coached WNBA legends including Cynthia Cooper, Lisa Leslie and Tina Thompson and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Pamela McGee.

The Atlanta Dream tips off its fifth season in May at Philips Arena as part of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), the world’s longest-running women’s professional sports league. The Dream is the defending two-time, back-to-back Eastern Conference Champion.
