-- Dream To Select First In 2009 WNBA Draft --

ATLANTA, December 9, 2008— The Atlanta Dream secured the first overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft, as a result of the draft lottery held today in New York City. There were no surprises this year as the draft order mirrored the statistical odds.

This week has been a busy one for the Atlanta Dream organization. The team also acquired 6-4 forward Sancho Lyttle in the WNBA Dispersal Draft on December 8, 2008, following the league’s announcement that the Houston Comets will suspend operations for the 2009 season.

“The last two days have been great for our organization,” said Dream General Manager and Head Coach Marynell Meadors. “It gives us an opportunity to get better faster. These two picks are definitely going to help us contend in the league.”

WNBA officials announced the results via conference call. The Dream had the best chance at landing the overall top draft pick with a 42% chance. Below are the final results with chances out of 1000 listed in parentheses:

2009 WNBA DRAFT LOTTERY ORDER (Chances out of 1000 listed in parentheses)
1) Atlanta (410)
2) Washington (256)
3) Chicago (163)
4) Minnesota (73)
5) Phoenix (73)

REMAINING ORDER FOR FIRST ROUND (As determined by overall records from 2008)

The Draft Lottery included the five teams that did not qualify for the 2008 WNBA Playoffs to determine the order of selection for the first five picks of the draft. The order of selection for the remainder of the first round as well as the order of selection for the second and third round is determined by inverse order of their respective regular-season records.

The 2009 WNBA Draft will be held April 8, 2009, following the conclusion of the NCAA Women’s Final Four.

The Dream was officially announced as the 14th team in the WNBA on October 17, 2007 and wrapped up its inaugural season of play at Philips Arena this past summer. For more information and to purchase season tickets, fans can call (404) 604-2626 or visit www.AtlantaDream.net.
