San Antonio Silver Stars
15-19, 4th in Western Conference. Lost in Western Conference Semifinals.
Following a 2009 season that concluded with a near-upset of eventual champion Phoenix in the first round of the WNBA Playoffs, the San Antonio Silver Stars had one glaring area they needed to improve upon: rebounding. After finishing second-to-last in that category in 2008, they ended dead last at 30.9 boards per game in 2009. But the Silver Stars used the off-season to address the weakness, acquiring Michelle Snow from Atlanta via trade, scooping up Laura Harper in the Monarchs Dispersal Draft and signing two-year veteran Tasha Humphrey. Not a bad haul, although GM Dan Hughes will need all the help he can get down low if he isn't able to bring back Ann Wauters, who joined the team midway through last season. If the Silver Stars don't have the services of Wauters to begin the season, they will be in need of a scoring punch down low since Snow, Harper and Humphrey haven't exactly proved themselves to be reliable at the offensive end and Sophia Young is currently San Antonio's only real threat. So Hughes could look for a low-post scorer, which this draft seems to have a decent amount of. But with the retirements of Erin Perperoglou and Vickie Johnson, San Antonio also suddenly finds itself needing to restock at shooting guard and small forward, although they did bring sharpshooter Roneeka Hodges over from Minnesota. But if they want to remain a contender, they may need to use their high pick to trade for a veteran player or two at those spots.
