22-12, 1st in Eastern Conference. Lost in WNBA Finals.
Coming off their most successful season in franchise history, the Indiana Fever don't necessarily have a lot of areas in which they need to improve. Since they didn't lose much from the team that came up just a win shy of being WNBA champions, just staying healthy in 2010 will give them a strong chance of getting back to the Finals. But nobody's perfect, and the 2009 WNBA Finals showed that to beat a team like Phoenix, a team that is guard heavy, Indiana could use some depth in its backcourt, which lost veteran Tamecka Dixon to retirement. Adding point guard Briann January did wonders for the team in 2009, so maybe the Fever look to go for a shooting guard this time around, especially since Katie Douglas and Tamika Catchings fit the small forward mold better anyway. The Fever might have also secured their first championship trophy if they were more effective in the paint. There were times when Tammy Sutton-Brown could seemingly do anything she wanted down low against less-than-physical Phoenix, but since Ebony Hoffman feels more comfortable on the perimeter, the Fever didn't have much else to throw at the Mercury in the paint besides Jessica Davenport, who came into her own a bit in the Finals. The progress of Davenport, a former No. 2 overall pick, will be something to watch in 2010. Still, it might behoove the Fever to look for a post presence in the draft.
